Ascending is a winged sculptural form that represents divine travelling, perhaps angels ascending as messengers of a supreme being or souls ascending towards Heaven. The wings hold and reflect light creating a central glow in the work enhancing the ethereal qualities of the piece. Inspired by the image of the 12th Century stone capital from Hyde Abbey, Charles Normandale and Julie Brooks-Hill re-imagined the angels from the stone carving to create the sculpture.
Created by Charles in hot forged stainless steel it is approximately 2.5 meters in height and is intended to be suspended. Smooth and textured finishes at the wing tips in combination with satin finished interior and highly polished exterior wing surfaces reflect light and define the shape.
In 1994 Charles was commissioned to produce a mild steel arbour for Winchester Cathedral’s Dean Garnier Garden. This was followed by the creation of Fish Sculpture formed in stainless steel and Kirkstone green slate in 2007.
